Suai Market Woman 01 - Timor-Leste

I asked in halting Tetun if I could take her photo. No reply. I tried smiling and gesturing with the camera. No response. Not even a flicker of recognition.

The other market vendors close to her made gestures indicating that I should not expect a response. Go ahead, they said. So I did.

Even decades after the devastation of the Indonesian occupation, Timor Leste still has deep wounds.
