Norsup's airstrip ends about 100 metres from the sea shore. People tend to prefer
waiting under this expansive tree because of the shade and the fresh
inshore breeze. The benches were constructed out of bamboo by the locals,
who sell drinks and 'smol kakae' (island food) to the pre-departed.
As the appointed time for departure approaches, passengers leave the shade of
nearby trees to cluster in the roofless shell of the terminal bulding.
The building was burnt down by angry land-owners about eight years ago,
following a protracted dispute with the government over compensation
for land use.
