This is one of the elders in Jacob's extended family. He moved from
Santo to Vila about the time of Jacob's marriage, but even so, we don't see
too much of him. He doesn't get around much these days.
I took this photo when we went to visit our Ambrym family who had
been displaced by the violence early in March.
I met Chief Ieru on the road out of Lenakel. We gave him a lift for a few kilometres. In return he sang a song for me. His light baritone voice improvised a list of every community in Port Vila, including Freswota 1,2,3,4 and 5 to Mele, Mele Maat and the underwater post office at Hideaway Island. He is an inspired comedian.
On the last, excruciatingly long leg of a drive from the West Coast back
to Ottawa, I stopped at dawn in a field near North Bay. The first light
of day coalesced into some truly beautiful hues as the mist began to
burn off the fields. I must have taken 30 shots in as many minutes.
This is the first of what I hope will be a series.
This boy was one of about a dozen who came to Sara airstrip
to watch our plane land. Most of the time he was laughing and
goofing around as boys are wont to do. But when left to himself,
he quickly became reflective.
I suppose the scars around his eyes may have something to do with that.
